Minutes of Rankin County Historical Society Meeting
July 24, 2012

Members of the RCHS and the Brandon Historical and Genealogical Society met in a joint session on Tuesday, July 24, 2010, at 7:00 P.M. at the Brandon Library.

President Anne Vanderleest welcomed the group and talked briefly about the proposed calendar for the RCHS for the coming months. She then circulated a sign-up sheet for volunteers wanting to get involved with the historical society.

Ms.Vanderleest introduced the speaker, Forrest L. Cooper. Mr. Cooper is a native of Rankin County, an archivist and historian. He has covered all corners of the state in essays written for Mississippi Magazine. His newest publication, Looking Back Mississippi: Towns and Places; is a collection of 29 of his essays relating stories dating from the mid-1800s to the 1930s. The volume, published by University Press, offers an alternative history of Mississippi, emphasizing the obscure and small-scale. Postcards from his private collection accompany each essay.

At the conclusion of Mr. Cooper’s interesting and informative talk a brief business meeting for the RCHS was conducted by Ms. Vanderleest.

Treasurer John Haliburton reported a balance of $9,516.

Efforts to complete the Museum house and roof installation are continuing. A structural engineer was asked to look at the house to determine if anything can be done to straighten the structure before installing a new roof. The engineer recommended removing the old, broken siding; then attaching cables to pull the building upright. Plyboard would then be nailed across the top, down and sides and along the bottom to reinforce the building. This would be done on each corner. The cost would be minimal with labor being the largest portion. We will request prison labor for this.

We have requested additional funds from Rankin County Board of Supervisors. No decision has been made on any funds but the society has been approved for up to $10,000 in labor.

The City of Brandon has agreed to pay $2,700 towards the installation of the roof; this will cover the installation of the metal roofing by Raymond Dean plus materials for framing and soffits to prepare for the installation. This prep work may be done by prisoner labor. Reiford Castens, RCHS member, has donated the metal roofing material.

Heritage Day participants have requested that the society sponsor a program again next year. Plans are being made to incorporate the Rankin County Symposium (held in March) with Heritage Day. This will allow Rankin County groups to have displays and presentations throughout the area. Even though it was cold and windy, Heritage Day drew some 60 participants and about 300 attendees.

Anne Stratton has agreed to present another Antiques Showcase at the library on Saturday, October 6, beginning at 9:00 A.M.
