Rankin County Historical Society
Board Meeting
March 26, 2014

The Board of Directors met at the home of Anne Vanderleest at 3:30 P.M. on March 26. Present were Mrs. Vanderleest, James Gould, Ron Thornton, Mel Corley, Paul Davis and Joan Singletary.

First item to be decided was the advertisement/s for Heritage Day. Paul Davis listed the prices and sizes available from the Rankin County News and the Rankin Ledger section of the Clarion-Ledger. After discussion it was decided that two ads will be placed in the Rankin County News: on March 16, a 2 col. X 5″ black and white for $95; on March 23, a 3 col. X 7″ color for $299.50. In the Rankin Ledger, on March 22 we will run a 2 col. X 5″ color costing $223. Paul will contact the papers to place the ads.

It was also suggested that Mr. Davis check with the Market Bulletin to see if they place notices or ads, and Mrs. Singletary will contact Nell Luter Floyd about getting an article placed in the Clarion-Ledger centering on Heritage Day.

Mr. Gould reported getting names and contact addresses from the Rankin County schools. Ms. Vanderleest will get notices of Heritage Day sent to them.

Mrs. Vanderleest has tried several times to reach Rebecca Blakeney to see if she would be able to work with us on setting up a promotion with the Rankin County Schools for Heritage Day. Ms. Blakeney, head of the History Department for the schools, has not yet returned the calls.

The Children’s Department of the library will be in charge of children’s activities during Heritage Day. They plan to do beading, have a scavenger hunt, and Jeff will lead a bird walk.

A request for a visit to the RCHS museum has been made and Mr. Corley will contact them and set a time.

Membership renewal letters will be completed by Ms. Singletary and mailed as soon as possible.

Friday, April 11, at 10:00 A.M. is Cleanup Day at the Museum.

Next joint meeting with the Brandon group is May 27. Mr. Thornton will contact Dr. Bryant Boswell, president Natchez Parkway Association, to see if he can be scheduled as our speaker.

Mr. Gould and Mr. Thornton attended the combined meeting on March 25 with BHGS. Cecile Wardlaw, executive director of the Greenwood Cemetery Association, spoke on this historic cemetery.

Dan Fairley urged during the joint meeting that organizations begin using social websites such as Facebook. A walking tour of the Old Brandon cemetery will be held on Saturday, May 17.

Since our Clean-up Day is set for Friday, April 11, we will conduct our next board meeting at that time.
