Richland is located about six miles south of Jackson on Highway 49, not far from the site of old Richmond, thought to be Rankin County’s oldest settlement. It bears the same name as the creek which meanders through much of the county. The name was chosen, no doubt, because it describes the rich soil found in the area. The community’s name was originally Plain.

Star Baptist Church

Star was first called Cherry in honor of the early settlers by that name, but was later called Star with the coming of the railroad. Mrs. N.B. Cooper is given credit for the name, saying, “It will be the shining light of Mississippi”. Another account has it that the name Star was chosen because it was easy to spell. Still another version of the name’s origin says that the name was chosen because of the big star that adorned the railroad station depot.
